James Gunn writing new Superman filmfor DC, after it was announced that Henry Cavill would no longer play the role. Gunn has said that this project will be about the character when he was younger.
In recent comments, the director said that the famous superhero is a "priority" for the studio, so it makes sense that he'll be writing the script.
Aside from the fact that Gunn is writing the script, nothing else is known about the project at the moment. Even though this probably isn't good newsfor fans of Cavill's Superman, it does help to solidify DC's new direction for the future.

Gunn and his co-chair and co-CEO at DC Studios, Peter Safran, recently met with Cavill to tell him the news and talk about ways they could work together in the future, maybe in a different role.
At this point, Gunn is just writing the script, but insiders say that he could also direct, depending on where his skills are needed at DC Studios. Gunn wrote on Twitter on Wednesday,
Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year. Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill. But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.- James Gunn
Insiders say that this Superman will be on the younger side, but he won't live in Smallville. Instead, he will work as a reporter for the Daily Planet named Clark Kent.
Fans who thought Cavill would be back as Superman soon may be surprised by the news. Cavill was in an after-credits scene in the October movie Black Adam. The Monday after the movie came out, he posted on Instagram that he was back as Superman.
Sources say that Warners' higher-ups approved that Instagram message before Gunn and Safran were hired, so plans had to be changed. Cavill said he was leaving the Netflix show The Witcher after his return as Superman. In an Instagram post, he talked about the change, writing,
I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to [Gunn and Safran’s] hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.- Henry Cavill
Since he first played Superman almost ten years ago, Henry Cavill has become a fan favorite. He played the role in 2013's Man of Steel and then again in 2016's Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and 2017's Justice League (2017).
Since November 1, when they started their new jobs, Gunn and Safran have been meeting with other important people in the DC universe. Sources familiar with the conversation say that they also recently met with Ben Affleck, who plays Batman, to talk about the possibility of him directing for them in the future.
At this point, there is no deal for Affleck to direct a DC movie. They also talked with director Patty Jenkins, who has decided not to make a third Wonder Woman movie.
Warners has also been working on a Black Superman movie written by Ta-Nehisi Coates and produced by J.J. Abrams. Coates is still working on the script, so Gunn's new movie isn't expected to affect that project.
Warners has wanted Gunn to direct a Superman movie for a long time. In 2018, Gunn left Marvel Studios for DC when he was fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for a short time. Toby Emmerich, who ran Warners at the time, wanted Gunn to direct Superman.
Instead, Gunn wrote and directed The Suicide Squad. That movie also paved the way for Peacemaker, an HBO Max spinoff starring John Cena, and gave Gunn a taste of world-building in the DC universe.
Still, Gunn has always liked Superman, and since his first days at DC four years ago, he has been thinking about this new movie.
Over the weekend, Gunn remembered the anniversary of Richard Donner's 1978 movie by sharing a poster and talking about how he saw it in theaters as a child in Missouri. The director and executive wrote,
I loved it and it rivaled Star Wars for me. And the score blew my mind.- James Gunn

Warner Bros. and DC Comics made a bittersweet announcement when director James Gunn said that a new "Superman" movie is being made, but that Henry Cavill will not be in it.
Gunn, the new co-head of DC Studios, said he was writing a new "Superman" movie that would focus on the hero's secret identity as "Daily Planet" reporter Clark Kent. He also said that Cavill would not be playing the "Man of Steel."
In an Instagram post, Cavill confirmed the news and said that he had met with Gunn and his co-head Peter Safran. He also said that he was disappointed but still had hope.
