The Claim
The Russian media disseminated a statement that was allegedly made by Yevgeniy Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner brigade, in which he claimed that Ukrainian forces were currently surrounded in the city center.
Earlier, Hanna Maliar, who is serving as the Deputy Defense Minister of Ukraine, stated that "heavy fighting is continuing."
The claims made by both sides have not been examined or verified by a third party. According to the statement that Mr. Prigozhin reportedly made late on Tuesday night, he said:

The fall of Soledar, a small salt-mining town in the Donetsk region, could make it easier for Russian forces to encircle the strategically important city of Bakhmut, which is located in close proximity.

It is unclear how significant Soledar would be in termsof strategy, but capturing it would be important for at least two reasons.
First, it would give Russian forces the opportunity to move closer to the city of Bakhmut, which is located in the region. Access to Soledar's deep, city-like network of salt mine tunnels, which have been abandoned since April, could allow Russia to penetrate territory that is controlled by the Ukrainian government.
Second, the invading forces would be able to show Ukraine how it feels to be on the receiving end of what it has been dishing out.
The ability of Kyiv to target Russian supply lines has been one factor that has contributed to the city's success in retaking territory.
Long-range missile strikes have frequently prevented thousands of invading troops from freely moving military hardware and preventing them from resupplying personnel, ammunition, fuel, and rations. Additionally, these strikes have impeded the troops' ability to replenish personnel and supplies.
Bakhmut would be effectively cut off from a major supply line coming from nearby Sloviansk if Soledar were to be captured. Before the war, Soledar had a population of about 10,000 people.
The UK said it believed Soledar was close to falling to Russia - but added that the Kremlin was "unlikely" to take Bakhmut immediately due to Ukraine's "stable defence lines".
Earlier on Monday, a senior military official from the US Department of Defense stated that a "good portion" of Soledar was in Russian hands.
Fighting has been going on around Bakhmut for months, and the most recent exchanges have been described as "savage" by a US official.
Two British nationals have gone missing in the area after being last seen on their way to Soledar.
Despite the long and intense battle, Oleh Zhdanov, a well-known Ukrainian military analyst, believes that neither Soledar nor Bakhmut are particularly important from an operational standpoint.
Mr Zhdanov said in an interview on Monday with the Ukrainian newspaper Gazeta that Russia "is trying to prove to the whole world that its army is capable of winning".
The Institute for the Study of War, a US-based think-tank, has said that Mr Prigozhin, "will continue to use both confirmed and fabricated Wagner Group success in Soledar and Bakhmut to promote the Wagner Group as the only Russian force in Ukraine capable of securing tangible gains".
Since its invasion of Ukraine nearly a year ago, Russia has suffered several major setbacks, including the loss of control of the only regional capital in the south that it had managed to capture.
Final Words
Capturing Soledar would be a propaganda victory for the Kremlin as well as a military victory.
The gains for Russia are modest and costly, but the town would be a much-needed trophy to present to domestic critics.
